Using E-learning platform locally: Claroline

This entry is a contribution of teacher Daniel Gastelú Computer. The situation described is applicable to any high school classroom (or primary) of Uruguay, and here we have the implementation of Ceibal .

There are many teachers who have ever implemented a virtual course used a free service of this type of platforms, such as Dokeos , but have had some problems because many times the server is discharged or made maintenance, etc, which makes the course is incomplete or we cause some delay.

content
When placed in a free party server, there is no guarantee if you do not see much traffic dams, therefore, another possibility is to install the platform locally at the educational institution.

Therefore, the decision is "server out of high school or within the high school? About
decisions will depend on each situation. So everyone sees what is best for your reality. It is not the same as a high school with 700 students in turn one with 250. It also applies to the case decision connectivity service. It is not the same as having a modem slower than a fiber-optic service.

If installed on an external server:
By accessing from the classroom to content outside the center suffers ANTELDATA bottleneck (0.48Mbps 0.23Mbps down rise in the optimistic case)

is given the situation that a teacher makes a blog or upload content to a platform and then from the living room can not access. This discourages the teacher. Why put things together and then not be used in class? Depend on the student's will go to a nearby school where they do work online, download the material and hope to drive to class. "Very complicated". There are thousands of options, including one GoogleDocs service. But ... indispensable connectivity ...

If installed on a server in the center.
Avoids bottleneck. It always works inside the bottle only to the restriction of the internal network speed (10/100Mbps)

Hardware:
relatively little investment is required. A central PC 2007 or 2008 onwards and a wireless router (those that have a rubber antennas). The antenna allows XO/XO1.5/Magallanes router to connect to the network.

Software :
You need the platform (Claroline in my case, free) and Server (Apache / / MySQL / PHP). Install and configure the services is a headache, so I searched my time evaluating a package all ready install (turnkey) with little effort. I downloaded the package Appserv and proceeded to install, all very simple. To all you give "Next", "Next", "Next", "Next" without changing anything and the end is ready. The current version I use is Windows Appserv 02/05/1910. ;

Checking if it works.
on the server machine Open a web browser and type the following address http://127.0.0.1 We have to show a picture like this:

need to know the IP server machine so that others can access the brand new web service. On the server, interpreters abrimnos a command window (Start / Run ... / command) In the black window that appears type ipconfig . will receive various data, but only interested in where it says IP address or IPv4, are numbers separated by dots. In this example we will say for example it is 192.168.5.40 ....

How we tested whether it was properly installed and accessible from the wired and wireless network?
We go to any center PC that is on the internal network. In the browser write http://192.168.5.40 and you should see the same page displayed.
We take any PC and connect to the router antenna. In view of access points are CEIBAL antennas, but we connect to the router antenna (it is easy to identify, generate are called as the manufacturer's mark and a shtick Belkin, Linksys and TP-Link. Router's manual explain how to rename). Once connected to the router in the XO / Magallanes open the Browse activity and type 192.168.5.40 and we see this same page.

to here so far so good. If there is interest to continue with the installation of Claroline, protecting access to key data tables and the initial configuration of Claroline.
I show some pictures of the Claroline platform Operational
in the PC Server:

In a "Magellan"

In an XO which is in Library:

NOTE: Fernando da
Rosa has developed an idea called "Aula intra Networks" which also explains how to install a web server using a wiki to work collaboratively in the classroom.

Yellow Stuff On Undies

The robot

The project Butiá born in the Faculty of Engineering UDELAR (Uruguay) (are MINA group involved Computing Institute, the Department of Mechanical Design Institute of Mechanical and Industrial Production and Education Unit). They also support the project ANEP - CODICEN and National Agency for Research and Innovation (ANII) .

The aim is to incorporate low-cost robotic systems in all public high schools in the country.

developed a simple and economical platform that allows public high school students in coordination with teachers and inspectors of secondary education, internalized by programming the robots behavior.

The platform design is done in such a way so that you can use an XO (or netbook) as it fits perfectly.

The robot can be controlled using different programming languages, but can also be used Turtle activity of XO. Of course it is a modified version of this activity, which have added a new palette where the different blocks that are needed for its control (sensors, speed, etc).

Here is a picture of the platform:

Here we see the robot in action running a simple application "line follower" held in Turtle, as you can see on the screen of the XO. In this example, the sensor is being used "Grayscale" to control the robot does not get out of the black line.

Drapery Shops In Bangalore

Butiá and XO activity for the blind for the XO

This activity was developed for all blind children can study and learn the material that their teachers are prepared.
Developed by Flavio, one of the members CeibalJAM community of Uruguay, which was inspired by the situation of Miguel, one of the blind students from the high school where he works.
currently comprises in CeibalTerminal, "MiguelEstudia" just read the contents of files with extension "txt" found a pendrive.

How do I use?
  • Teachers prepare a file reading material and save this file with the extension "txt".
  • Then copy this file to pendrive student.
  • When the student studies, plug the stick in the xo. Then open CeibalTerminal
  • and since then the activity will guide you in finding the desired file.
  • When the student passes the mouse pointer over the file, CeibalTerminal reads the file name must refer to its contents.
  • When students find the file you want to read, simply click with the mouse, then CeibalTerminal opens the file and begins reading its contents.
Please note:

When preparing the study material for blind students, the teacher should take into account some things like

  • Punctuation marks, spaces and blank lines are essential for the reader to do the right breaks in the reading, use these resources to provide the best possible reading to your child.
  • spelling rules are not respected and that no matter how you write the words but how they sound. A word like "Hereford" sound "erefor" for which the best approximation to the pronunciation may be "jereford" or "gereford."
  • You mean replace units as mm mm, º C degrees, km / miles (the tildes are also essential.) Download

MathGraph32

MathGraph32 is a geometry and analysis software, distributed under the GNU GPL v3 (since on 15/05/10 the software author, Yves Biton decided to release as free software). MathGraph32

Java is translated, Now, in three languages: French, English and English.

Thanks to the work of CeibalJAM , especially Prof. Luis Belcredi and Mr. Marcos Orfila this software was "unsugarized", or may run on a laptop XO (OLPC XO). Download

NOTE:
Mathematics Prof. Luis Belcredi in place has much to share educational materials, has also written several books on mathematics, you can see here .
Among them, you can download the book free for teachers 1, New Mosaics , first-year basic cycle, adapted to the new math program, Reformulation 2006.

also has a site called Xo (xsubcero) hangs especially where materials for the XO
